Rishi Sunak was elected the new UK Prime Minister. He’ll be the first British-Asian PM and the first Hindu PM with Kenyan roots.

After Liz Truss resigned as British Prime Minister on Thursday after a contentious 44-day term, Rishi Sunak was named the party’s new leader on Monday afternoon.

Sunak became 42 years old on May 12, 1980, when he was born. The UK’s youngest prime minister in contemporary times is Sunak.

Sunak was born to Punjabi-origin Hindu parents. Usha is his mother, and Yashvir is his father.

While Sunak’s mother was born in Tanzania and worked as a pharmacist, running a drugstore, his father, Yashvir, was born and raised in Kenya and worked as a medical practitioner in the NHS

Of his three siblings, Sunak is the oldest. Sunak, though, is a Southampton native.

Sunak studied philosophy, politics, and economics at Lincoln College in Oxford after attending the esteemed Winchester College. He continued on to Stanford University in California, an Ivy League school, where he received an MBA as a Fulbright Scholar.

In October 2014, Sunak won the Conservative primary over Wendy Morton to become their nominee for Richmond (Yorks). 

William Hague, a former party leader, first secretary of state, and foreign secretary, previously held the position.

Sunak coauthored a report on BME communities in the UK while serving as the head of the Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) Research Unit at the center-right think tank Policy Exchange in the same year.

At the general election in 2015, he won the district’s MP seat with a majority of 19,550 (36.2%).

He has served in positions such as Chief Secretary to the Treasury and Chancellor of the Exchequer while Boris Johnson was Prime Minister. He has been a member of parliament since 2015, representing Richmond.

On July 24, 2019, Prime Minister Boris Johnson named Sunak as the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, reporting to Chancellor Sajid Javid. 

The following day, he was admitted to the Privy Council.

In the general election of 2019, Sunak won with a larger margin of 27,210 (47.2%).

Following Javid’s departure on February 13, 2020, Sunak received a promotion to Chancellor of the Ex-Chequer as part of a cabinet reorganization. 

The role was his until 2022.

Sunak ran for office in the Conservative party on July 8, 2022.

On July 20, the then-Foreign Secretary Liz Truss and Sunak emerged as the final two contenders to be presented before the membership for the final leadership ballot. Sunak had garnered the most votes in each round of MP voting, winning 137 to Truss’s 113. Truss defeated Sunak in the membership vote with 57.4% of the vote, becoming the new leader and Prime Minister.

Following Liz Truss’ resignation on Thursday, Penny Mordaunt, Sunak, and Boris Johnson—who had resigned as a prime minister prior to Liz Truss’ appointment—were all considered potential candidates for the shortened leadership race.

In 2009, Sunak and Akshata Murthy were united in marriage, which took place over two days in Bangalore.

In addition to being a director of the venture capital firm started by her wealthy father, N.R. Narayana Murty, a co-founder of the IT corporation Infosys, his wife also owns and operates her own fashion line, Akshata Designs.

With a combined net worth of an estimated £730 million, they are among the wealthiest individuals in the UK, giving Sunak the unofficial moniker of “the richest MP.”

Krishna and Anoushka are the daughters of the couple.
